The Bachelor of Laws is the qualifying academic law degree and the foundation of the legal education pathway in Ghana. The Council sets minimum standards for the curriculum, admission, assessment, and graduation that every accredited institution must follow. The curriculum is developed in consultation with accredited institutions and reviewed every five years so that it accords with contemporary demands for legal services. It combines theoretical study with practice-based skills: advocacy, interviewing and counselling, legal research, applied legal writing, pre-trial preparation, trial practice, transactional skills, alternative dispute resolution, professional ethics, and training in information technology.
Entry requirements
Excellent academic performance in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination or an equivalent examination recognised by the institution and the Council; or a first degree from a recognised tertiary institution. Accredited institutions may not discriminate on grounds of race, gender, place of origin, colour, religion, social or economic status, language, or any form of disability (Act 1170, s.46).
